About Us

The Farm Between is a certified organic fruit farm and nursery that specializes in hardy and regionally appropriate fruit trees, berry bushes, and pollinator plants in Jeffersonville, VT.

The Farm Between was founded by Nancy and John Hayden in 1995, and their agricultural journey is described in their book Farming on the Wild Side. The Haydens came to an ecological orientation in agriculture, such as planting polyculture orchards, native plants, and establishing wild spaces for habitat. The farm focused on perennial plants and developed methods to holistically support soil, pollinator, ecological, and human health. They also  provided opportunities for the community to learn from and engage with these principles. We strive to carry on that legacy.

In its new iteration, the farm is now being collaboratively managed. Sarah Skelding, a long time employee of the Haydens, is the onsite manager and steward of the nursery and orchards. Sarah is an expert in perennial plants and their care and she runs the day to day operations on the farm. She is passionate about plants and the interconnected life systems in an ecological footprint. Her extensive experience can guide any customer of the farm towards the best management practices they can establish at their property and the different benefits our plants can bring to customers.

West Farm, run by Angus and Holly Baldwin, is integrating The Farm Between into their operations. They have multiple decades of experience in agriculture, primarily in wholesale organic vegetable farming. Holly is also owner of a small lacto-fermented and value added food business called Three Crows Farm & Ferments. Angus’s agricultural experience and passion is developing regenerative practices that support crops and land while producing the highest quality nutrient dense food. They are motivated in their belief that it is possible to restore and enhance the ecosystems around us with thoughtful, holistic, and intentional management.   Their goal is to support and enhance the work that is being done at The Farm Between while also bringing new opportunities and enterprises to the farm. They share Sarah’s passion for the work the Haydens have done and are excited about the opportunity to further develop those systems; especially around community, nutrition, health, land management, and education.
